Year of the Black Rainbow, the band’s fifth studio album, will be released April 13, and is a prequel to the legendary Amory Wars tetralogy, a conceptual series that started with The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2002), and followed by In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (2003), Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005) and Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow (2007). The deluxe edition of the new album will also contain a 352-page Year of the Black Rainbow novel written by the band’s Claudio Sanchez and best-selling author Peter David. Coheed and Cambria consists of Sanchez, Travis Stever (guitar), Michael Robert Todd (bass), and Chris Pennie (drums).

The band’s tenth album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, will be released June 23 in both a standard edition, and a special 3-CD collection including a CD of instrumentals and one of cover songs. They’ve been recording since 1989, and have developed a huge and intense international fan following. Drummer Mike Portnoy says of the new release, “I think that this album is taking all the things that our fans love about us and putting them all in one place. A lot of the music is dark and heavy, but at the same time it has a lot of soft and melodic edges that are equally important to our sound.” The band consists of James LaBrie (vocals), John Myung (bass), John Petrucci (guitar), Portnoy, and Jordan Rudess (keyboards).

Beto Cuevas recorded ten albums with well-known Chilean band La Ley, but after they broke up in 2005, Cuevas started working on his solo career as both an actor and musician. Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire is the Comedy Central network’s first attempt at a fantasy-comedy series. It debuted April 9 in an hour-long special episode. Kröd (Sean Maguire) is The Golden One, the only person who can fight against the evil that is the Meconian Empire and Chancellor Dongalor (Matt Lucas). He picks a band of doughty adventurers that includes his quirky Pagan warrioress girlfriend Aneka (India de Beaufort), Zezelryck (Kevin Hart) a warlock who has the gift of gab, the half human/half swine servant Loquasto (Steve Speirs), and the fierce and proud Bruce (Marques Ray). As one can imagine, this group is not so much powerful as powerfully ineffective. Queensrÿche has sold at least 20 million records worldwide with their first three albums going gold, and their next two releases going platinum and triple-platinum. The band consists of Geoff Tate (vocals), Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass), and Scott Rockenfield (drums). It was Tate who initiated their latest project, the impressively ambitious American Soldier. “The process started with a conversation with my Dad. He was a career military man, with the Marines in Korea and an Air Force tour of duty in Vietnam in ’68,” says Tate. “He had never talked about his experiences in war, and all my life I’ve been asking questions and waiting for the stories that I never heard. These past couple of years he started talking, and I taped one of the conversations. That was the beginning.” Tate went on to interview dozens of soldiers, those who served in World War II and every intervening conflict up to and including the effort in Iraq.

“It’s very much a statement of the soldiers,” he says, “It’s where they are at and what they have experienced. I hope the album, as a whole, is a statement that can get them talking to each other and begin that process of connecting that needs to happen between people. This was one of the more challenging records for me to write, lyrically, because I am not involved in the songs. It is not about me, and it’s not about how I feel. It is me interpreting stories from the perspectives of the soldiers and putting their words into lyric form, retelling the story in the most honest way that I could.”
